ENTERPRISE, Ore. – The Chinook salmon season on the Wallowa River will close July 24.
According to Jeff Yanke, district fish biologist in Enterprise, angler participation is very low in the fishery. In addition, water temperatures are beginning to warm which will further limit catch rates and may cause considerable impact to the salmon.
ODFW did not expect to offer a Wallowa River fishery this year, as previous run forecasts were too low for harvest. However, the river was opened on short notice on July 2, after local fishery managers upgraded the run estimates.
Since the fishery opened, monitoring efforts estimated very few anglers were using the fishery. “We talked with anglers and they said they had switched to trout fishing or were pursuing other summer activities,” Yanke said.
