LA GRANDE, Ore.—ODFW is hosting a “Youth Outdoor Day” at Ladd Marsh Wildlife Area on Saturday, June 29 from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. at Ladd Marsh Wildlife Area headquarters (59116 Pierce Road, about 7 miles south of La Grande).
The day’s activities take place at various stations staffed by volunteers sharing their expertise on outdoor safety, ethics, responsibilities and conservation. Stations include: beginning archery, firearm safety and handling, introduction to shotguns and sporting clays, wildlife identification and calling techniques, air rifle target shooting, hunting dog demonstrations, wildlife management and law enforcement, Blue Mountain Wildlife’s birds of prey presentation, muzzle loader and “mountain man” activities, basic fishing skills, fly casting, and more.
New this year, participants are not required to pre-register and both the event and lunch are free of charge.
Participating organizations include ODFW, Ducks Unlimited, Oregon Hunters Association, U.S. Forest Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Oregon State Police, Eagle Cap Traditional Archers, Ducks Unlimited, Grande Ronde Model Watershed, La Grande Rifle and Pistol Club, Grande Ronde Muzzleloaders, Blue Mountain Wildlife, Ace Hardware and many individual volunteers.
“Many local organizations, agencies, businesses and individuals have joined together this year to provide unique experiences for participants of all ages.”, said Dave Larson, Ladd Marsh Wildlife Area manager.
