Lookingglass Creek opens June 1 to spring chinook jacks

May 30, 2013

LA GRANDE, Ore. — Lookingglass Creek, a tributary to the Grande Ronde River at Palmer Junction, will open to fishing for hatchery spring chinook jacks from Saturday, June 1 through June 21. The open area is from the Moses Creek Lane Bridge (County Road 42) upstream to the confluence of Jarboe Creek.

With only 300 hatchery adults expected to return to Lookingglass Creek, that’s not enough fish to open a full fishery, according to Tim Bailey, ODFW fish biologist in La Grande.

“However, over 1,100 jacks are expected providing an opportunity to open a brief season for these younger, smaller chinook,” he said.

Jack salmon are early-maturing males that are less than 24-inches long.

The daily bag limit will be five jack salmon with two bag limits in possession, and fishing is restricted to artificial flies and lures. All adult Chinook must be released unharmed.  During the jack chinook season, the river is closed to fishing between Jarboe Creek and 200 feet upstream of the hatchery water intake.

Private timberlands owned by Forest Capital and open to public access border the area open to sport fishing. Anglers are reminded to respect private property by picking up trash when leaving.
