Oregon Wolf Population

^* The Oregon minimum wolf count is determined at the end of each calendar year and is based on wolves that staff has verified through direct evidence (e.g. observations, remote cameras, tracks). The actual number of wolves in Oregon is greater than this minimum count.  For purposes of monitoring, a pack is defined as a group of four or more wolves traveling together in winter.  A breeding pair is an adult male and an adult female wolf with at least two pups that survived to December 31 of the year of their birth.  Additional information is available in the annual reports.  *These numbers are subject to change based on new evidence.

Number and causes of documented wolf mortalities in Oregon.  Years without documented mortalities prior to 2009 are not presented in the table.  Additional information is included in the annual reports.  Major mortality categories include human-caused, natural, and unknown. Human-caused consists of authorized lethal removal (e.g. mortalities associated with livestock depredation and human safety) and unauthorized lethal removal (e.g. accidental and unlawful mortalities).  Examples of natural mortalities include disease and injury.  Unknown mortalities are those without sufficient evidence to determine cause of death.
