More about Cockles

Raking Cockles

clam map

Step 1 - Find a clam bed

Cockles can be found in sandy areas of Oregon's larger estuaries. See the "where to dig" page for maps.

Step 2 - Start raking!

Rake through the sand softly keeping aware of when you hit a cockle.

Note: Don't rake the eelgrass

Often, as in the area pictured, eelgrass is found in clam beds. Eelgrass makes excellent habitat for a variety of species such as crabs, juvenile salmonids, and other marine fish, so please be careful to avoid disturbing it.

Alternate method, for the best tides

Look for clams or identify the shows.

cockle 3 Cockles will often be right on the surface.
cockle 4 They can be simply picked up.

Another method, for the best spots at the lowest tides

Just pick them up, this is as easy as clamming gets.
